I’ve been using Dropbox for a number of years and I’ll admit that it changed the way I think about file storage. Keeping things on an External Hard drive on my network just seems silly if you think that I can only access that content within the boundaries of my home network… if it’s plugged in and switched on. It’s also expensive. I have around £300′s worth of hardware at home at the moment not doing anything. What if it breaks? Not only will it cost me to replace the hardware, but the files that I have lost don’t come with a price tag.

I now have most of my files with me where ever I go. I can view them on my phone, my home and work laptops, other people’s machines. Anywhere. Except the moon. 3G signals aren’t great on the moon.

I downloaded Google Drive as soon as it was released and I’ve been keeping both Dropbox and Google Drive in sync with each other using third party tools. The other day, Dropbox ran out of space and wouldn’t let me sync any more files. Google Drive still had 2gb free. Most of it was photos so I moved them to Picasa which freed up some more space. Files stored in Picasa don’t count towards your Drive space, but if you upgrade your Drive space, they also upgrade your Picasa and Gmail space.

Although I’m loving Google Drive, there are a couple of things I want from it though before I think it’s great.

1. Ability to set the upload bandwidth limit and turn it off if necessary. I had a geeky night in the other night and wanted to try Google Drive and Dropbox side by side. Dropbox is quicker at uploading as you can turn the bandwidth limiter off. G-Drive has been taking a while (a couple of days on and off) to upload my photos where Dropbox did it within about an hour.
2. The Android app doesn’t show thumbnails of images like the Dropbox app does.
